Drop Everything And Read & be Resilient – DEARR Time
The DEARR program allocates 12 minutes after lunch for students and staff to read silently. This will help to improve not only students’ reading ability, but also their ability to concentrate, their creativity, vocabulary and analytical skills.
Students have a number of responsibilities during this time:
Bring an appropriate book to read every day
NOT a magazine or newspaper
VCE students can read a textbook and use a highlighter to highlight study notes
Books can be brought from home or borrowed from the library at recess, lunchtime, or during English class.
Arrive on time to DEAR(R)
Read silently for the session, avoiding distractions
Follow all teacher instruction as usual.
We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to read every day!
Lakes Entrance Secondary College runs a weekly Resilience Program, this takes place each Wednesday during DEAR(R) time. Students are required to attend and bring their student planner and writing materials; discussion will be focussed around resilience pathways.
What is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to be flexible and creatively respond to the challenges of life.
The Program is a whole school approach to enhance students’ resilience, optimism, confidence, and social and emotional skills. Children and young people with higher resiliency are more likely to thrive in learning and achieve greater educational outcomes.
